Safely tucked away in the engine shed is this ex-Army Whitcomb locomotive built in 1943. The unit was to be shipped to Africa during WWII but the turn of victories stopped the shipmnet. It was purchased in 1956 for use at a pulp mill. Eventually retired and donated to the museum. Specs - 80 ton, (80-DE-7-B), 0-4-4-0, double power diesel electric Buda Model engines, 2 Westinghouse Model 197-A generators, tractive effort of 53,330 lb, max speed 40 mph. Rebuilt with Caterpillar 353's. |
