Iver Tranes General What's with the doors on the end? 6/5/2017 4:53:09 PM
Chuck Zeiler General Good question, I don't know. I hope someone will comment someday and explain. My best guess is that the CP had a customer that required end door loading ( long cargo, like airplane parts ) and had a few cars built with end doors. Note also that it was in BN's Cicero, Illinois hump yard with a DO NOT HUMP placard, just a suggestion perhaps. 6/6/2017 11:01:09 AM
fred shannon General Well boys your in luck the car your looking at is hne of over 1500 end door automoble box cars build in the late 1940's and early 1950's. In the days before auto racks automobles were shipped out in these types of cars. Now you could ship 4 cars in each car, you would load the first two cars and by using hand operated hosts or block and tackles you would host these cars to the roof of the car, then you would the next two cars under them block them in place and your off and running. There orginal number series was 294000- 294200, 295500 thur 296899. In 1980 these cart were modified in Weston Car Shops Winnipeg, Manitoba and the end doors where welded shut, the railway re-lined the interiors of the cars so that why could be used for pacjaged grade "A" lumber used in making furniture. These cars where then re-numbered 291500-291799 series. And that is the story behind these cars. 7/13/2017 2:51:03 AM
