Nothing draws a crowd like an accident, and here was one along the Kansas City Southern about three miles west (railroad north) from this train’s destination at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. A southbound train with SD40-2 650 and SD40 622 had just hit a Dickies work clothes rental service truck at the intersection of Clearview Parkway and Airline Highway (U.S. 61) and was waiting for the state trooper (next to the coupler) to finish his investigation. Signor had been a team track along the KCS and its predecessors for over 50 years, but it disappeared in 1985 when the KCS began using a nearby ICG line and abandoned this track. The ICG had a grade separation at Clearview Parkway, which eliminated problems like this. |
