7th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during August of 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engine #7140 and two other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by EMD. #7140 is an EFS-17M built in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. They have pulled a westbound mixed-cargo freight train to a point midway between the 7th Street Bridge (not shown) and the 4th Street Bridge (visible in the distance). They have stopped, and await orders to proceed up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Also visible (L to R) are some of what used to be the PRR's Passenger Car Shop buildings (now owned by Lithcote, a tank car company), the steel water tower (the last vestige of the Age of Steam in this photo), as well as the new 4th Street Bridge and the PRR's Altoona Yards beyond it. |
