Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here are two PRR freight trains: one is eastbound (heading right), the other is westbound (heading left). The eastbound mixed-cargo freight is visible in the foreground. The westbound "Yankee Jet" ~ a merchandise express train from Boston to Chicago in 26 hours or less, powered by six GP-9 locomotives ~ is visible in the background. For more details and photos of the Yankee Jet, see the July-August 1961 issue of "Pennsy" magazine. |
