Before self unloading ore boats became common, minerals were unloaded at lake ports with these Hulett unloaders, seen from the passing Lake Shore Limited. They look like something out of a Star Wars movie, and operating one was described as being on a "carnival ride from hell" due to the operator riding in a bucket mounted cab. Several of these relics are still on the Cleveland waterfront in 1990, not long for the world. The ore jennies in the foreground, however, will stay at it a few more years. |
