Brad Lowans General The tower at Lurgan was closed sometime in 1983. I caught a five week holddown off the WM extra list to work John Waggaman's Thanksgiving vacation in 1974. The WM worked the daylight seven days a week and the Reading Company worked the second, third and four day relief turn. Ellis Unger was the third trick operator and a very big man. I would guess close to 350 to 375 pounds. The Reading Company hardly ever had any "stiffs" to hand up to Eastbound trains going towards Carlisle Jct. But the WM it seemed always had a 25 MPH speed restriction somewhere between Lurgan and Hagerstown that caused Ellis a great deal of aggrivation. You can see how small the rungs are on that ladder. A man the size of Ellis had a very hard time getting up and down that ladder to hand up orders. One night he slipped coming down the train order staff and his one leg got caught in the rungs and he was hanging upside down when the end end of a Westbound went racing by. Brad Lowans General ....told them of Ellis's predicament and to stop the cab at the train order stand which they did. It took both the conductor and the flagman to lift Ellis up and free his one leg from the rungs. 6/23/2013 3:16:01 AM
