Good looking 1902-02 Burnham, Wm & Co class S-4 compound Ten Wheeler-type with 63" drivers and generated a boiler pressure of 200 psi for its 15.5"x30" cylinders. Tractive effort was a modest 28,698 lb. In 1918 Baldwin simplified the class, increased the cylinder size to 21"x30" and boosted the tractive effort to 35,700 lb. Confusing note on back by photographer Walter W. Adams states - "Built Baldwin 1902. 40 built, all in service". Not sure that was possible with the date he listed for the photo. Thanks to Eric Carlson (see comment below), the class of locos was simplified in the 1920's and four still survive today with one possibly being restored to operation. |
