Benkelman, in the far southwestern corner of Nebraska, is home to a new grain elevator, which is switched by DeBruce Grain SD9 6129. This venerable EMD product rolled out of the La Grange IL plant as Colorado & Southern 837 in April 1959. The unit was renumbered Burlington Northern 6232 when C&Ss parent railroad, the Chicago Burlington & Quincy, was merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Spokane Portland & Seattle. The BN would later merge with the Santa Fe, and this engine became, for a short time, Burlington Northern Santa Fe 6129. |
