The memorial in Spring City, Tennessee where in 1955, a school bus was struck by a southbound Southern Railway freight train. 11 children were killed. Their mothers and many other women from Rhea County lobbied for a new Stop, Look & Listen law to be required of all bus drivers. Within 2 months this law was passed within the state of Tennessee, within a year, all 50 states had adopted it. On this gorgeous August day, a southbound Norfolk Southern freight train lays on the horn for the very same crossing where those children were killed and this law was passed all those years ago. |
