George Sillett General Beatuiful engine! How long did the restoration take? and What needed done. also what is the history of this engine? 3/21/2011 9:40:18 AM
Robert Duncan Sr. General George, (and all others interested.) Restoration took 8+ years. It was a frame off and complete restoration. There were so many things done, new smokebox, freame repair, etc. that it is hard to remember and list everything that was done. Southern 630 was a typical 2-8-0 for the Southern Rwy and was used in freight service throughout the South. She was sold to the ET&WNC along with the 722 in the early 50's. The ET&WNC numbered her 207 and used her on their line. When Southern Rwy. decidided to create a steam excursion program, Sou. traded ET&WNC 2 RS3's for 630 and 722 and put them in service along with Sou 4501 and S&A 750 as excursion locomotives. Her flue time expired in the 80's and she had sat several years @ TVRM before being briught into Soule Shops for the extensive rebuilding. She now will serve TVRM and NS as the first locomotive used on the NS for their 21st century Steam program. Keep an eye out for the website for the 21st Century program coming out soon. 3/21/2011 10:01:57 AM
David Barrentine General Robert will TVRM ever get that Central of Georgia steam engine up to running status? It would be really neat to see a CofG steamer running the rails! 3/22/2011 10:31:32 AM
Robert Duncan Sr. General David, I doubt 349 will run. (Unless I win the gazillion dollar lottery that I don't play very much.) It's so small, she couldn't carry more than 2 pssngr cars at a time. hard to make $$ that way. I agree with you tho, it would be neat to see run! 3/22/2011 11:21:46 PM
