L&N 40514 at Nashville, Tennessee on August 24, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This was shot from the Melrose Avenue overpass at the north end of Radnor Yard. This car is loaded with new brake shoes. Workers stationed at the orange chutes would place the new shoes in the chute as the car moved through the yard, depositing the new shoes on the ground for car knockers to use as replacements for worn shoes on freight cars. The middle car has all the discarded worn brake shoes picked up earlier from the yard. I believe the first car was loaded with a different type of brake shoe than the last car. At the time of the photo, brake shoes were either cast steel or composite. |
