UP U25B 625
UP U25B 625 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 625 was built in August 1961 (c/n 34224), retired in September 1972, sold to Morrison Knudsen becoming MK 11, scrapped by M-K in October 1981. It is an early production U25B, one of 11 units delivered to the UP with high short hoods and vertical stairs (road #'s 625-632 and 634-636). The original GE U25B demonstrators were picked up by the Frisco, becoming SLSF 753-756. The steps and narrow walkway around the ends were unacceptable to the railroad, so GE redesigned the U25B and introduced their version of the low short hood. The second four demonstrators, GE 2501-2504 were sold to the UP, becoming UP 633-836. Only 633 (ex-GE 2501) was equipped with a low short hood. Later, in August 1962, the UP acquired four more U25B's with low short hoods (#'s 637-640), for a total of 16 U25B's on UP's roster, out of 478 total turned out by GE. In this photo the trailing unit is steam generator-equipped UP GP30B 738B.
