Grey Ghost Reflections at Horizons Industrial Park
KCSM AC4400CW 4552, built as TFM AC4400CW 2652 in August 2000, leads eastbound BNSF coal train C-EBMMLM with BNSF SD70ACe-P4 8504 trailing second-out down the BNSF Saint Joseph Subdivision on a surprisingly-warm February afternoon. After catching it passing over the 1920-built Platte River Bridge from the CB&Q days near Farley, we decided to beat it to the trackside lake located at Horizons Industrial Park in Riverside. As a true testimate of time, KCSM 4552 still retains its original Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana Battleship Grey paint from before the company was rebranded to Kansas City Southern de México in 2005. After Kansas City Southerns full takeover of the TFM, the equipment on TFMs roster was promptly rebranded to the new KCSM look, either receiving patches in their current "Grey Ghost" look or eventually given new Southern Belle paint. As of early 2025, KCSM 4552 remains as 1 of only 32 AC4400CWs still wearing their original TFM paint on the now CPKC roster. BNSF 8504 is also only 1 of 20 SD70ACe-P4s built for BNSF in 2014.
