Southern Pacific office car 133 GUADALUPE was on the westbound SUNSET LIMITED leaving New Orleans. This car had been built in May 1912 as SP second 100, was subsequently renumbered SP 127 in 1927, then Texas & New Orleans 991 in 1928 and finally SP 133 in 1962, when the T&NO was merged into the SP; but it always wore the same name. It was retired on 5 July 1974 and sold. The car was initially assigned to SP vice-president Julius Kruttschnitt, who had been born here in New Orleans in 1854. He went to work for the SP in 1885 and rose up through the ranks, becoming chairman of the railroad’s executive committee in 1913. He retired in May 1925 and passed away in New Orleans two weeks later, just shy of his 71st birthday. (approximate date of photo) |
