Southern Pacific car 107 was leaving New Orleans on the rear of the SUNSET. It was built by Pullman in September 1916 as a private car for Henry E Huntington, and was lettered San Joaquin & Eastern SAN MARINO. In 1920 the car was re-lettered for the Southern Pacific, and after Huntington’s death in 1927, it was bought by the SP where it became car 107 DEL MONTE. In 1956 the car was modernized and received outside swing hanger trucks with roller bearings and disc brakes. The 107 was retired in 1978 and was sold to Mexico’s Ferrocarril del Pacifico in 1979; but it returned to the US as a private car in 1985. The car was made Amtrak compatible and received Amtrak number 800270, and after passing through several owners, it now belongs to Robert and Rita Menzies, who also own the Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway. |
