#800165 KANSAS
Title:  #800165 KANSAS
Description:  Built in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6856 to Plan #7600 as D&RGW 52 seat chair #1240, 1 of 67 such cars built in that Lot, which was part of a large 215 car order jointly placed by C&O and NKP in November 1946. This order consisted of Lots #6840 and #6853-#6867. 195 of these cars were ordered by C&O and 20 by NKP. The NKP order included an additional 5 52 seat chairs, built in Lot #6840 to Plan #7600A. An additional 5 cars were tacked on in April 1947 for a total of 10; these cars were delivered in February 1950 as #100-#109. As passenger ridership dropped and long-term plans changed, C&O sold a number of cars in September 1948 to 3 roads: the B&O, IC, and Rio Grande. The Rio Grande acquisition consisted of head end cars, sleepers, and 8 chairs, which were delivered in June 1950 as #1240-#1247. The 59 chairs initially retained by C&O were delivered concurrently as #1610-#1668. C&O further reduced their fleet by cancelling 7 cars in October 1948 and selling additional cars after delivery: in 1950, additional cars were sold to IC, NYC, and ACL; in 1951 and 1957 to B&O; in 1957 to C&NW; in 1958 to SAL; in 1959 to MP; and the last sale of cars by C&O was in 1969 to SCL. Upon delivery in 1950, the #1240 was moved into the shops, and emerged in 1951 as business car #100, which was named in 1956 as the WILSON MCCARTHY. Of the other 7 chairs, Rio Grande sold 5 in 1967 to D&H, which resold them in 1971 to Venezuela, and the other 2 were sold in 1970 to PC, which were acquired in 1974 by Amtrak. Besides those 2, Amtrak also acquired all 10 of the NKP chairs in 1971 (4 from SCL [sold to ACL in 1964] and 6 from the N&W [via merger]); 9 from C&O; and 10 from SCL (sold to SAL in 1958). The #100 later became property of Rio Grandes new parent company, ANSCO, which also owned nee-SP&S dome sleeper CALIFORNIA and buffet lounge IOWA (later renamed UTAH). ANSCO renamed the car KANSAS. All 3 cars were used to provide first class service on the SKI TRAIN, and after ANSCO sold the Temp SKI TRAIN consist to the Algoma Central, retained these 3 cars, which are now based in California.
