LN 4-8-2 #400 - Louisville & Nashville |
Description: |
Definitely a sad sight with this Baldwin 4-8-2 Light Mountain steam locomotive sitting in the scrap line waiting for the torch. Built in December of 1925, the massive and powerful loco was put to work hauling passengers. Barred by bridge loading limits from operating further south, the 4-8-2s later added Louisville-East St Louis trains and even freights. They saw out steam on the L & N, retiring in the mid-1950s. Specs - serial #58877, class L-1, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 333,100 lb, tractive effort of 53,883 lb. Max Miller photo |

Interesting photo with the tender wearing the new number $483 while the headlight still has the original #421. Built by Baldwin in October of 1930, the renumbering took place in 1953. The date was given as 6/9/1950 which might be incorrect or the renumbering took place in 1950 or it wore both numbers. Specs - serial #61552, class L-1, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 337,730 lb, tractive effort of 53,883 lb.The loco was scrapped sometime in the 1950's as the L&N dieselized. This 1917 Baldwin built 4-8-2 "Mountain" type steam locomotive was the answer for more power to pull the heavier passenger cars on the Southern Rwy. Specs - Ts class, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylinders, engine weight of 314,800 lb, tractive effort of 50,290 lb. No date, location or photographer given for this photo but since it appears the green apple/gold paint scheme has not been applied to this, the photo was taken before the late 1920's when the Ts class had their repainting done. |
