Description: |
Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1903, this 4-4-2 "Atlantic type" locomotive was one of only 20 that were on the C&O roster but they did hold on for decades with thirteen of them remaining in use until 1949. This one is caught in my Hoosier state servicing Richmond, IN. Specs - class A-16, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x26" cylinders, engine weight of 173,000 lb and tractive effort of 27,073. The class was rebuilt in 1920's with reduced boiler pressure but increased cylinder size. Net effect was the tractive effort remained largely the same. R.W. Legg photo |

Description: |
This 1906 Alco built "Atlantic" type locomotive rolls through Peru, Indiana on this unspecified winter day. Not one of the better designs for the mountainous part of the C&O, it must have worked well in the flatlands of Indiana. Max Miller is credited with the photo. Thirteen of the 20 locos in the group remained in use unitl 1949 - tribute to their abilities. Always like posting photos from my home state! |

CNJ 4-4-2 592 "Atlantic Camelback" - Central Railroad of New Jersey |
Description: |
With a larger firebox than current locomotives to burn anthracite coal, the engineer's cab was forced to sit on the side of the boiler. Besides being called a "camelback" the New Jersey railroad also labeled them "Mother Hubbard" while B&O called them "Snapper". Unbelievably fast, they could reach speeds of 90 MPH! Wish Amtrak would look into them!!!! |
