DSL 2-6-6-0 #209 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Description:
Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1910, this articulated Mallet was originally built as a 0-6-6-0 configuration for the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific RR but this website doesn't offer that rare configuration for Alco. A leading truck was added in 1912 along with mechanical stokers by the now renamed Denver & Salt Lake RR. Specifics - Class 76 (later L-77), 55" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 21x32" high pressure cylinders, 33.5x32 low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 362,000 lb, tractive effort of 70,456 lb. The class was purchased by the Denver & Rio Grande Western where they served until retirement in the late 1940's-early 1950's. Unknown photographer.

Description:
A fine photo of the 1924 Alco-Richmond built 2-6-6-2 for the Western Pacific from the Harold K. Vollrath collectioo. According to SweamLocomotive.com, the first 5 in the class built by Brooks in 1917 cost $52,861 each but by the time the last 5 were built by Richmond in 1924 the cort per loco had increased to $83,405. Inflatimn was a constant problem even back then! Specifics - M-80 class,57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x32" high pressure cylinders, 37x32" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 42:,500 lb, tractive effort of 75,112 lb.

DSL 2-6-6-0 #215 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Description:
Here is another Alco-Schenectady built 2-6-6-0 Mallet configuration (although this website does not have that option for Alco's). Drury (1993) says that these locomotives were the beneficiaries of two updates to the Mallet design the railroad was already operating -- a leading truck to make it a better road engine and a mechanical stoker. They apparently served their purpose well because all but one went to the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1947, from which they retired a few years later (1949-1951) as 3370-3375. Specifics - Class 210 (L-77), 55" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 21x32" high pressure cylinders, 33.5x32 low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 361,000 lb, tractive effort of 70,456 lb. No info with this old postcard scene except -1911 Helper over Crawford Notch-. I dont know if there was ever a ball signal at Bartlet or not but Im placing it at Bartlet for the moment. 1201 was one of 4 MEC X class locomotives from the B&M used as helpers on the Mountain. An Alco-S 2-6-6-2 built or aquired in November 1911 and scrapped 10/29. /DL

Description:
MEC had four of these 2-6-6-2s. I understand they were bought for helper service on the mountain division but did work elsewhere on the MEC, most likely between Portland and Waterville. It looks like the photographer was on a flat car for this scene. Originally from the Allen collection. Built by Alco at Schnectady it was formally B&M #1294 (renumbered to B&M 3003) built in November of 1910 and scrapped November of 1929. Builders number 48651. No date with this photo. /DL

Description:
I’ve ended up with two copies of this photograph over the years, one says it was taken at Portland the other in Waterville. If the October 1929 date is correct this was taken just a month before this locomotive was scrapped according to RR History. MEC had 4 of these 2-6-6-2s. I understand they were bought for helper service on the mountain division but did work elsewhere on the MEC most likely between Portland and Waterville. I don’t think they ever went to Bangor. White-lined and sitting in the scrap line is this massive Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 Mallet Mogul steam locomotives. Built by Alco-Schenectady in February of 1917 as CO #820, it was renumbered 1421 in August of 1924. The loco met up with the scrapper's torch at Richmond in the spring of 1961. Specs - serial #56605, class H-4,, 56" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x32" high pressure cylinders, 35x32" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 435,000 lb, tractive effort of 93,600 lb. No date was give for the slide but it was marked as "Charly's duplicate slide".

CO 2-6-6-2 #1527 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1919, this is one of the last and lighter weight 2-6-6-2's ordered by C&O. According to www.steamlocomotive.com, this series of lighter weight 2-6-6-2 Mallets were not well received by C&O because "the C&O's requirements had outstripped the 2-6-6-2 arrangement." Specs - H-5 class, 57" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure (later dropped back to 210), 23x32" high pressure cylinders, 35x32" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 448,000 lb, tractive effort of impressive 79,336 lb. Description:
The andle of this photo by engineer C.W. Burns compresses the massive size of this 1917 Alco-Schenectady 2-6-6-2 "Mallet Mogul" as it sits in the Minerva yard. It's original number was 1358 but renumbered in 1936. Specifics - class NE-2d, 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21.5x32" high pressur cylinders, 34x32" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 363,800 lb, tractive effort of 63,029 lb. The actual day in 1939 is approximate as none was given, only the year.

Sitting in storage at Salt Lake City is 2-6-6-2 3350. Built by ALCo in 1916, 3350 was originally Norfolk & Western 1453. It was sold to Rio Grande in 1942 to ease the wartime power shortage. 3350 would be scrapped in July 1952.
