"John Stevens," 0-4-0, 1963 |
Description: |
Vintage. Here is an original photo that I took at the Strasburg Railroad site in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, on 11 August 1963. Shown here is a replica of the "John Stevens ~ First Steam Locomotive ~ 1825." This replica was fabricated at the Altoona Works. Despiwe the pistons and cog wheels, this locomotive is basically jusr a wagon with a boiler and a water barrel. Not much attention was paid to crew comfort either! This replica is now on display in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. |

The Southern Railway's replica of the BEST FRIEND OF CHARLESTON was giving rides to the public on a siding just north of the railroad's station in Slidell, Louisiana. The train is now behind the Charleston Visitor Center, so we'll probably never see anything like this again. |

IC Mississippi |
Description: |
IC Mississippi at Museum of Science and Industry. "The Mississippi was built in the 1830s. Although extensively rebuilt, the Mississippi retains the fundamental features of locomotive design from the 1830s. The exact origin of the Mississippi is unknown. Evidence suggests that Braithwaite and Milner built its components in England in 1834. Dunham and Company of New York City assembled all the imported train components around 1836. Operating from Natchez, Mississippi (a port city on the Mississippi River), the Mississippi locomotive was apparently built for service on a short railroad line." |
