This fair b&w photo taken by Guy Luther Dunscomb caught the 1895 Schenectady built 4-8-0 "Mastodon" type steam loco sitting in a storage line. #2913 was the last to be scrapped from the class when it went to the torches in January of 1951, at 55 very productive years with SP.The location was not specified. Specs - class GA/TW, 54" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 22x26" cylinders, engine weight of 175,000 lb, tractive effort of 35,655 lb. Although no location was given on the photo, it probably was Sacramento. |

Long before an RS11 unit wore the number "2921", this Alco-Schenectady twelve-wheeler did. Built in 1898, it has a relatively modern look to it despite the small drivers. Specifics - TW-8 cross-compound class, 55" drviers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 23x32" and 35"x32" cylinders, 192,000 lb engine weight, 36,543 lb tractive effort, converted to oil burners, simplified by SP shops in 1911. scrapped between 1949-53. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo. |
