Interesting example of an Alco-Brooks built 2-8-2 Mikado. Originally built for the Spokane Falls & Northern, it was acquired by GN in the merger of the SF&N in 1921 (serial #55444, reclassified as GN O-2). The loco was eventually retired April of 1947 and scrapped March of 1949. No date or location given for the photo taken by S.R. Wood. The "Midwest Oil Co" sign in the background suggests Sioux Falls, SD. |

Description: |
This Alco-Scenectady 2-8-2 Mikado was originally built for the Spokane, Portland & Seattle but diverted to the Great Northern. It was one of the very last Mikados to serve but finally headed to the scrappers in August of 1955 after dieselization was nearly complete. Specs - serial #61038, O-3 class, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylindeers, engine weight of 320,900 lb, tractive effort of 62,949 lb. Unknown photographer |
