ERIE 2-10-2 #4013 & ERIE 2-8-2 #3000
Title:  ERIE 2-10-2 #4013 & ERIE 2-8-2 #3000
Description:  Great action shot of a double-header pulling a string of freiight cars that disappear into the distance. Lead loco #4013 was a 1916 Alco built "Santa Fe" type locomotive. According to www.Steamlocomtoive.com "Their rough riding qualities were problematical until revised counterbalancing smoothed the way. All of the Erie's 2-10-2s were renowned for their great power, whether as road engines or pushers." ERIE #3000 was a 1911 Baldwin product, the first of its N-1 class to be built. No date given for this action shot so an arbitrary one was used. Unknown photographer.

ERIE 2-8-2 #3199
Title:  ERIE 2-8-2 #3199
Description:  This appears to be the builder's photo of this lone member of the N-3A class "Mikado" type locomotive. According to SteamLocomotive website, Number 3199 was built to use uniflow cylinders, which uses a long piston that admitted steam at each end as did standard double-acting piston designs but exhaust the steam at the center of the cylinder through ports. This in theory would avoid the temperature drop in the valve area that waste energy. The concept proved impractical and 3199 was rebuilt as a conventional locomotive. It was retired in 1950. There are no surviving Erie 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotives. Date is approximate
