Chesapeake Western Railway #102
Title:  Chesapeake Western Railway #102
Description:  Built by the Richmond Locomotive Works in 1895 with construction number 2186, #102 would spend it's entire life hauling passenger trains along the lines of the Chesapeake Western Railway between Elkton, Virginia, and Harrisonburg, Virginia. Originally delivered for the Chesapeake & Western Railroad as #102 with the name "Lizzie Allison", the locomotive was probably purchased with funds from the estate of W. E. D. Stokes who was the owner and directer of the railroad at that point in time. On March 3, 1900, Stokes officially decided to change the name of the railroad from the Chesapeake & Western Railroad to the Tidewater & West Virginia Railroad. This new name didn't stick though because the railroad never actually extended into West Virginia. This led Stokes to revert the name back to the Chesapeake & Western and immediately lease the line to the newly incorporated Chesapeake Western Railway which itself was established on March 13, 1901 with the same management. At some point while working on the Chesapeake Western, the name "Lizzie Allison" was removed from the side of the locomotive cab and the engine was then on only known as #102. The locomotive was still in active service as late as 1937 as seen in this photograph, but was probably running on borrowed time as it was retired in the late 1930's and scrapped. This photograph displays #102 stopped with a passenger train at the Elkton, Virginia, passenger station. The first passenger car being the locomotive's tender appears to be a baggage car. Month and year are correct. Exact date is an estimate.
