Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides. |

A CN local pauses on the former C&NW siding at Stroebe, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. Local was waiting for a northbound local. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on rrpicturearchives.net)). The train is resting under the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. Seeing as it was, in some regards, a bridge to nowhere and many citizens of Menasha have Polish ancestry, it was jokingly referred to as the Polish Connection. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. On 1 May '19, the interchange was named in honor of a local politician. I vehemently disagree with the choice made by the powers-that-be. I steadfastly believe that First Sergeant Elmer J. Burr would be a much more worthy namesake for this prominent location. First Sgt. Burr was a Wisconsin National Guard Soldier from Menasha, WI, who earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously, for his heroism and self-sacrifice on Christmas Eve of 1942 at Buna, New Guinea. The former SOO rails run parallel just out-of-frame to the left. |

The new concrete railroad ties beyond the lead locomotive are stacked next to the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Since we basically shot the entire East Troy Railroad in length now we found it as a good time to break off and go to the CN, as it was now right around the corner. One of the big objectives on the CN was to catch EJE 703, which had been working on the Waukesha Local for quite some time now. EJE 703 is the only remaining EJE painted engine with the classic green "J Ball" on the nose. However, since it is a weekend, we were aware that the engines (if they were where they usually are parked) would not be moving and we would have to settle for stills. Sure enough, upon arriving at the Waukesha station, both the EJE 703 and CN 9530 were parked in the usual parking spot with a gondola. Time for some stills and some CN action! |
