BM 3713 in the Steamtown erecting shop 4/19/2015 |
Description: |
Lots of work still to do, but it's good to see physical progress from my last visit. With 80-inch drivers, this is going to be a real crowd pleaser when they finally get it back to steam. |

BM 3713 |
Description: |
Steamtown's Boston & Maine Pacific still undergoing restoration inside the restoration shop. A 1934 product of the Lima Locomotive Works, the 3713 was one of the locomotives part of a contest that the B&M held for schoolchildren living along their railroad to name the engines. This locomotive was given the name "Constitution", which lasted through most of its service life. Retired in the 1950s, it would be sold to F. Nelson Blount through the Edaville Railroad as one of the first locomotives that would make up the Steamtown collection. It is currently one of two 4-6-2 type engines from New England under restoration to active service, the other MEC 470 at Ellsworth, ME. |

BM 4-6-2 #3715 - Boston & Maine |
Description: |
This is one of the only 10 4-6-2 Pacifics built by Lima for the Boston & Maine. In addition, these last 10 Lima Pacifics were the last Pacifics that Lima would ever build. To commemorate these last 10, B&M held a children's naming contest. The winning name for #3715 was "Kwasind" from the "Song of Hiawatha". All the rest of the Boston & Maine's large stable of 4-6-2 Pacifics were built by Alco, nearly all of those were Schenectady locos with the exception of the DLW Brooks built locos that were purchased in 1943. Specs - serial #7655, P-4 class, 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders. No exact date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but it appears to be Boston, MA. |
