Heading out with an Alco leader |
Description: |
The NYSW was still using a couple of Alcos in local service. The C430 fleet was down to two units, but C 420 2010 kept on. Here it is leading a pair of EMDs past the Binghamton Agway as it heads up the Utica Branch on BH 1. |

Pair of 45s and something odd |
Description: |
The pusher set on this PYRP has a pair of SD 45s, not uncommon for the time. The odd unit is against the train, NYSWs remaining C 420, which did not typically work in this type service. |

Cruddy light |
Description: |
Poor light was not unusual in the Southern Tier-it rained a lot here-and most of us shot photos in it anyway, since you often got some interesting consists, even if it was raining. Heres one of them, a BH 1 with a C420, GP 18, and GP 38, something you could find only on the NYSW. The train is northbound at Phelps St. |

Slow start |
Description: |
BH 1 slowly starts away from the Binghamton yard, passing the Agway mill(note the CR box cars there. Agway received grain in box cars into the mid 90's). Once it has its train onto the branch, it will start in earnest for the siding at Kattelville, where it will drop its train of hoppers. |

It never stops |
Description: |
NYSW had a way of putting together some power combinations youd never see anywhere else. Sometimes it happened in the yard, though often youd see them on the road too. This set was one only the Susie Q could come up with, at East Binghamton. |

Big deal |
Description: |
There was a time when a pair of Alcos such as this was not totally unusual, though there with only 16 C430s built, they did not widely mix. By 1990, ANY Alco was a notable sighting. Here we have two of the more unusual models, a C 400, and a high hood, steam generator equipped C 420, basking in the sun at East Binghamton. |

Bigfoot and the Easter bunny |
Description: |
Binghamton for a long time had a reputation of being the place where everything eventually turned up. This was true in the NYSW era as much as it had been in the past. A lot of odd short line power showed up, since the D&H shop had capability smaller places did not, and Im qure Walter Rich saw it as a revenue opportunity. The result was that a lot of things that "could never happen," happened here. We see a case in point: an NYSW C420 coupled to a Rahway Valley 70 tonner, though at this stage, it was not so far fetched, since both roads were under the Delaware-Otsego umbrella. Still, it was not likely to happen-but there it is, like seeing the Easter bunny and bigfoot at the same time. |
