Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2410 |
Description: |
This 1923 Alco "Mountain" type locomotive was listed by the IC as the 2400 class following the guidelines of naming the class after the first number in the series. These units gave the IC much needed speed and increased pulling power for longer, heavier trains. The Paducah shops then built 76 more Mountain type locos between 1937-43 patterned after these first ones. This is a May, 1970 reprint from C.W. Burns original negative taken at 27th Street in Chicago. . |

Description: |
Nice photo from a direct scan of the original negative and it appears that it is newly delibered 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive built by Alco-Schenectady in 1923. No date or location was given but with Mary Rae McPherson's help (see comment below), I now believe it was taken in Chicago, IL, possibly 27th Street. The date is possibly 1923 as it appears to be a newly delivered locomotive. Specs - class 2400, builder #64580, 73.5" drivers, impressive 225 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" cylinders, engine wt 362,500 lb, tractive effort of 57,120 lb. Unknown photographer. |

After nearly 34 years of service, the loco was retired and scrapped in February of 1960. Rebuilt specs - 73" drivers, impressive 230 psi boiler pressure, 28x28" cylinders, engine weight of 376,500 lg, tractive effort of 61,824 lb. Unfortunately, no photographer, date or location was listed for the photo so approximates were used. |

NYC 4-8-2 #2933 - New York Central |
Description: |
Beautiful boiler plate face, number board, and light on the massive 1929 Alco built 4-8-2. Called a Mountain type locomotive by almost every other rr, the NYC decided it should be named "Mohawk" to reflect the NYC region. |
