Description:  George Horna slide. The 3029 was the only black unit to receive the "split rail IC". This GP40 was built in 1966 and was from the first order of GP40's. The GP40's brought many "firsts' to the IC roster: the first units with the 645 prime mover, the first units with a turbocharger and the first units with an AC generator. The IC experienced many issues with the new GP40's including leaking fuel injectors, cracks in the center casting area and traction motor flashovers.

Description:  We're standing along the parallel Illinois Central Gulf and New Orleans Public Belt tracks near Jefferson Avenue, where the two main lines of each railroad cross. ICG GP10 8114, SD20 2024 and GP40 3031 are heading away from us, going to Mays Yard after delivering intermodal train No. 55 to the railroad's IMX (InterModal eXchange) at Nashville Ave. and the Mississippi River. Espee 4449 is sitting on the New Orleans Public Belt westbound main track, after having spent a week on display at the 1984 Louisiana World's Fair. Earlier this morning an NOPB switch engine had moved it from the fair site to here, and it is waiting for an ICG switch engine to accompany it to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The Daylight and its matched set of cars left for home in Portland, Oregon the next morning. Daylight engineer Doyle McCormack has placed the number "5" in the locomotive's train numbers boxes. Number 5 was the westbound ARGONAUT, the secondary train between New Orleans and Los Angeles.

Description:  At 5 PM on a Saturday afternoon a trio of Illinois Central Gulf units - GP40 3033, GP38-2 9602 ABRAHAM LINCOLN, and GP40R 3104 - were southbound at Eagle Street, on their way from Mays Yard to the railroad's intermodal facility at Stuyvesant Docks Yard to pick up an outbound piggyback train. For about 25 years the locomotives for the IC and ICG piggyback trains would run light between Mays Yard, where the units were serviced, and the intermodal terminal (and vice versa); but this practice was eliminated by fueling the engines on the southbound train at McComb and then letting the power sit at Stuy Docks Yard. The two tracks on this side of the engines belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt, and the empty space in the foreground had accommodated two NOPB-KCS interchange tracks which were removed around 1980.
