L&A 4-6-0 505 |
Description: |
Louisiana & Arkansas 505 was the last of four Ten-Wheelers (502-505) built by Baldwin in April 1920, and when this photo was taken next to the new engine house at WEST YARD in April 1951 - just outside of New Orleans - it was the only one still on the roster. It was scrapped by the railroad at Pittsburg, Kansas in December 1953. In the background to the left of the tender was a KCS passenger car, because this is where KCS passenger trains were serviced between 1950 and the opening on New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in 1954. TC 509 (4-6-0) (EX LOUISIANA AND ARKANSAS RAILROAD) |
Description: |
The Louisiana and Arkansas RR acquired this “Ten Wheeler” directly from the builder, Baldwin Locomotive Works, in 1913. They took delivery of eleven 4-6-0’s that were used in both passenger and freight service. It was designated Engine Number 403 and later renumbered 509. It served the L&A until 1950, when it was sold to the Louisiana and Midland RR, which used it until a head on collision with their own “Mikado,” Engine 551, took it out of service. It was repaired by a private citizen and sold to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in 1982, where the tender was re-lettered with the Louisiana & Arkansas designation. The 509 was acquired by the Friends of the Cookeville Depot Museum in 2002. It was reconfigured to match the large fleet of Baldwin 4-6-0’s operated by the Tennessee Central Railway Company. Its markings were changed accordingly and its numerical designation remained as 509, joining the ranks of its historical sisters- the TC500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, and 507- all “Ten Wheelers” which regularly pulled their cargos past the Cookeville Depot. |

RDG 4-6-0C #560 - Philadelphia & Reading (Reading) |
Description: |
Both RDG 560 & its sister #556 are sitting in the Newton, PA, yard with steam up and ready to roll. Built by Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1890, this was originally an L1-a class. Original specifics - 61.5" drivers, modest 145 psi boiler pressure for its double set of 20x24" cylinders, engine weight of 136,525 lb, modest tractive effort of 19,239. Between 1921-29, the class was rebuilt by Reading shops and reclassified as their L-3se class as it appears here. Superheated, it produced an impressive 200 psi boiler pressure and delivered an improved tractive effot of 34,785 lb. No photographer listed for this photo. I have to admit, I find the camelback locos weird but fascinating creatures in the history of railroading! |
