AMTK 4620 and CBQ 4978 |
Description: |
Today dad and I are beginning Day 6 of our Galesburg Trip, the latter half of it. This morning we started our day in Mendota, IL. We spent the night in the Quality Inn and Suites off of I39 just outside of town. The hotel sits not far from the BNSF Mendota Sub. When we woke up we witnessed an eastbound manifest pass with an H1 Dash 9 2nd out. We finally got out of the hotel as AMTK 381, the westbound Carl Sanburg, came into town. We got caught up in road construction which allowed it to pass us. Just as we got to the station the train began to continue west. Got it just in the nick of time to get it passing the CBQ steam engine on display at the station! |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4980 at Galesburg, Illinois on July 1, 1956, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4980 was built by Baldwin in September 1923 (c/n 57073), and sold for scrap in October 1960. A personal observation, this locomotive appeared extremely polished for 1956, I wonder is it was a candidate for preservation. |

CB&Q O-1-A 4994 |
Description: |
White tires on Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4994 presumed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in October 1923, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4994 was built in October 1923 ( c/n 57113 ), one of 60 ( road # 's 4940-4999 ) in the last order for 2-8-2's by the CB&Q. It was equipped with an Elesco feedwater heater and Hodges trailing truck with the front swing links coupled directly to the equalizing bars, and the rear ones were coupled to castings that were bolted to the rear engine frame. Number 4994 survives as FW&D 401. In the 1960's the FW&D decided to donate a steam locomotive to Texas Tech University, only to discover that all its steamers had already been scrapped. Number 4994 was acquired from parent CB&Q, and repainted to FW&D 401 ( 401 was an oil burner, 4994 was a coal burner ). It is currently on display as part of the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas. The following explanation for the back porch on the tender is from Hol Wagner: In 1923 the ever-frugal Q was planning to increase the water capacity of a number of its O-3 and M-2/M-2-A engines by lengthening their tenders, so it had Baldwin deliver new O-1-A Mikes 4940-4999 with tender underframes long enough to fit the lengthened tenders of the O-3s and M-2 engines. The underframes were then swapped out as the lengthening was completed, which means most of the 4900's ran for at least a short time with the back porch tenders. The hoses from the bottom of the tender to the journals of the trucks fed water to the bearings to cool them in the event they overheated (fortunately, water and oil don't mix). Each hose could be disconnected and attached to the other journal of the same truck, if needed. |

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5060 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5060 presumed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in March 1917, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. In 1917 the CB&Q ordered 15 2-8-2's from Baldwin based on the earlier O-1 class with modifications producing the O-1-A. Whereas the O-1 had inside admission valves, the O-1-A had outside admission. In addition the linkage connecting the Hodges trailing truck was modified and Schmidt superheaters were applied. The success of this design brought about an additional order for 123 more 2-8-2's, built between 1917 and 1923. The O-1-A's built in 1923 were numbered downward in the 4940-4999 number series as the group was approaching the 5200 number series already assigned to the class O-2 Mikados. |

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5069 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5069, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5069 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45702) and sold for scrap in September 1953. The date and location chosen based on the February 1, 1952 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet. The locomotive looks pretty tidy,so figuring out its last class shopping date might pinpoint the date of this photo, and maybe the Galesburg roundhouse in the background? |

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072 at Longmont, Colorado on October 26, 1939, photograph by R. B. Graham, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5072 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45760) and sold for scrap in April 1955. The locomotive has an extended smokebox, generally the sign of a lignite burner. The lignite coal produced more cinders and ash requiring more screens and baffles. There's also a yellow square painted at the far end of the coal bunker, advising hostlers which coal to load. |

Number 5073 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45761) and sold for scrap in April 1954. This locomotive was a lignite coal burner, the evidence being the extended smokebox and the yellow square painted on the side of the tender near the top rear of the coal bunker. |

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5074 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5074 at Creston, Iowa, date, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5074 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 ( c/n 45792 ), retired and sold for scrap in June 1953. Hol Wagner adds the following: As for the photo of 5074, although both Creston and Hastings got identical concrete coal chutes in 1937, I'm pretty sure this view is at Creston, as the 5074 was assigned to the St. Joseph Division until 1940 and then moved east to the Galesburg Division. This also pretty well dates the photo to the 1937-40 period, and with the capped stack a good guess would be 1940 as it was being ready for movement to Galesburg. Of even greater interest to me, however, is that the 5074's tender is from an S-1/S-1-A/S-2/S-2-A Pacific and rides on Commonwealth drop equalizer tender trucks; it's the only O-1-A I've ever seen so equipped. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5079 at Keenesburg, Colorado on January 11, 1941, photograph by J. Schick, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5079 was built by Baldwin in June 1918 (c/n 48994) and sold for scrap in November 1960. At an unknown date it was converted to burn oil. I would guess this was a switching move, based on the open door on the stock car. |
