Description: |
Coal Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken near the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3768, #4046, and a pair of "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapods" whose road numbers are not recorded. #3768 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920 and retired in October of 1953. #4046 is a B-6SB (0-6-0) switcher built in February of 1924 and retired in August of 1950. In this context, the "Pacific" is departing the Station with a passenger train, the switcher awaits its next assignment, while the "Decapods" are powering a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible in the background are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. It's classic Altoona railroadin'! |
