Chione. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in South Amboy, New Jersey, on 3 March 1954. The photographer is not identified. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5473, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927, rebuilt in Juniata in 1944, and retired in February of 1956 after 29 years of faithful service. Note the hand-throttle mounted on the smokebox. |

Here is page 11 of a 15-page cover article by Frederick Westing entitled "This Is The Story Of A Pacific ~ The World's Greatest." It was published originally in the August 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 54. All of the locomotives pictured here are PRR Class K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." Top Left-Hand Photo: #5473 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1927, reconditioned in 1944, and retired in February of 1956. Top Right-Hand Photo: #3876 was built in Juniata during 1923 and retired in April of 1950. Bottom Left-Hand Photo: #5385 was built in Juniata during 1924 and retired in June of 1948. Bottom Right-Hand Photo: #1139 was built in Juniata during 1917 and retired in 1956 after 39 years of faithful service. |
