Description: |
BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5818 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5818 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're braking a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. |
