The Pennsy Aerotrain
Description:
How are 1958 Corvettes, GM Motorama dream cars & the Pennys Aerotrain related? All were designed by Chuck Jordan who eventuaoly became VP of General Motors Design. Unfortunately, the Aerotrain was not successful - lightweight but underpowered, sleek looking but hard riding - ultimately rejected by most of the railroads. Wiqh the help from William Rodkey's comments (below), this was taken in Philadelphia during the year long test by the PRR. Date is approximate. The syle still looks great to me

"Altoona Shops," Page 44, 1996
Description:
Here is page 27 of a 43-page article by James J.D. Lynch, Jr., entitled "Overview Of The History And Development Of The Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops." It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 44. Top Right-Hand Photo: Stopped at the Altoona Passenger Station is the PRR's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. Bottom Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR engine #3720, an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during 1919 and retired in November of 1953 after 34 years of faithful service. It has just had its tender topped-off with more coal, and is facing East toward Bellwood and Enola. Photo taken on 04 November 1943.

Top Left-Hand Photo: Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9619 and two other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9619 is an AF-16 built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Bottom Left-Hand Photo: Shown here is the PRR's "Aerotrain" built by General Motors during July of 1955. Top Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR engine #8826, an AS-16M built by the American Locomotive Company in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Middle Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR-Railway Express Car #7480. Bottom Right-Hand Photo: Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8606 and #8608. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each.

Here is page nine of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 40. Middle Photo, Partial Caption: "New York-to-Pittsburgh Aerotrain, in the summer of 1956." Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Centipede #5834 assisting a westbound freight up Horseshoe Curve, circa 1956." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5834 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948; it was designed to be a 3,000 horsepower passenger locomotive (BP-60A), but was later downgraded to be a 2,500 horsepower freight and helper engine (BH-50). Also visible is PRR N-5 caboose #477724. Both photos by Ken Murry.
