Elmira. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Elmira, New York, on 30 June 1956. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3437, an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata as an H-8SB during January of 1913, rebuilt as an H-9S in August of 1923, and retired in December of 1957 after 44 years of faithful service. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4628 and #3437. #4628 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during October of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1935, and retired in October of 1958. #3437 is an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata as an H-8SB during January of 1913, rebuilt as an H-9S in August of 1923, and retired in December of 1957. Northbound Coal. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Elmira, New York, on 5 May 1957. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3437 and #4632, along with N-5C cabin car #477859. #3437 is an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata as an H-8SB during January of 1913, rebuilt as an H-9S in August of 1923, and retired in December of 1957. #4632 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in October of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1931, and retired in January of 1960. The "Consolidated" is towing the disabled "Decapod" to the roundhouse for repairs. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-23). |
