BO 4-6-0 #117, "Thtacher Perkins" - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
This is a nice photo of the historic B&O 4-6-0 #117 "Thatcher Perkins" on display at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. According to the B&O RR Museum where the loco now resides, ""This engine was the next step up from earlier 4-4-0 American type locomotives. It was built at Mt. Clare, during the Civil War in 1863, and honors its builder Thatcher Perkins. Designed for special purpose to pull heavier war passenger trains on the mountainous part of the B&O between Cumberland and Wheeling. The 4-6-0 class represented the culmination of the balloon smokestack required for wood fuel. Later engines burned coal and had bigger boilers and shorter stacks to fit under bridges. It was first exhibited by the railroad in 1892 and again in 1927 at the Fair of the Iron Horse." It also appeared in 1934 Chicago "Century of Progress" and again at the 1939 New York World's Fair (this photo). This photo is from the Ralph G. Dunn collection. |

I'm pretty sure this is 117 - it looks like the same locomotive that the poster I got when I became a member of the B&O Museum |
