Album Info:VR-Yhtymä Oy or VR Group is a state-owned railway company in Finland. Formerly known as Suomen Valtion Rautatiet VR. It has 12000 employees, of which 470 work at Ilmala depot along with about 600 employees of subcontractors. They serve about 70 long distance and commuter trains daily. I had the opportunity to visit during October 2013 the depot facilities at Ilmala, just north of main capital Helsinki. The continuously rising inquiry in the rail traffic brought the servicing and repair capacities of the Finnish state railroads to their load limits. In a 6-year modernization program the arrangements and workshops were concluded in the main depot Ilmala in 2012. 2013 a car loading facility was added for the overnight trains to Lapland. From 2014 on another modern servicing centre with investments of almost $70 million will be available with the depot in Oulu in northern Finland.

Description:  The 40 years old Sr1 will be replaced by Siemens VECTRON, beginning 2017. 80 units are ordered, 97 option on VECTRON wll later replace the Sr2. The 25 kV 50 Hz VECTRONs will replace existing Soviet-built Sr1 locomotives on passenger and freight services on the 1 524 mm gauge network. The 19 m long locomotives weighing 90 tonnes will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h and the capability of hauling 2 000 tonne trains. Rated at 6.4 MW, they will be equipped for regenerative braking, produce less waste heat than previous locomotives, and be equipped with two diesel engines for 'last mile' operation on unelectrified industrial lines, at docks and in yards.
