Album Info:One of the most successful and least seen electric locomotives were the Virginian Rwy EL1a, EL2a & EL3a units purchased from Alco/Westinghouse starting in 1925. This is another crossover steam-electric unit, having the main drive rods like a steam unit but electric motors pulling power from their pantographs. Great video of one of an EL3a in action can be found at "Critical Past" (http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675050756_electric-locomotive_powerful-locomotive_The-Virginian_railroad-track)

VGN EL3a #107
Title:  VGN EL3a #107
Description:  Built by Alco & Westinghouse starting in 1925, these single, double & triple EL-3a electric units were specially built to handle the major grades found on the Virginian Rwy. The unique two wheel linkage like a steam engine main drive makes it a transitional unit between steam and electric. Unique, powerful, and in a brutish, boxy way, beautiful. Photo by R. D. Patton.
