SPLAT Car leads Steel Train (CR YPSA22) |
Description: |
This is as local as railroading gets. A SPLAT car (short for shoving platform) leads a train of scrap metal east on the Sayreville Running Track (formerly the RRRR) for the Gerstel Ameristeel Steel Mill. The crewman is riding on what is basically a caboose without the housing. Hes radioing back to the rest of the crew in the locomotive perhaps to give warning of a lurking railfan. To the right of the knuckle coupler is a F.R.E.D. For the first leg of the trip, the SPLAT car brought up the rear as the train traveled up the Gillespie Branch from Browns Yard to the Sayreville Running Track wye. The train then pulled west onto the wye so that it could shove east to the steel mill as seen here. This scene was reminiscent of being at a car wash as the train took a good brushing from the trees. |

CR YPSA22 to Steel Mill |
Description: |
CSX 8815 brings up the rear of this steel train that is headed for the Gerstel Ameristeel Mill. It is passing over S. Minnisink Ave./Cheesequake Rd. The abandoned siding to the right was once used to serve DuPonts Parlin Plant which has been in operation since 1904. It is still in operation today producing an assortment of products including Teflon. Its unfortunate that the railroad is no longer being utilized to serve this facility. |

Gerdau Ameristeel Steel Mill property by the Raritan River in Perth Amboy |
Description: |
The covered hoppers are in service, but the blue switcher engine no longer is. In fact I believe the switcher engine has been resting at this exact location for more than six years now, http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=239302&nseq=0 . If this switcher ever had a chance to be put back in service those hopes were likely dashed by the storm surge of Sandy, which would have submerged it to the top of the hood. The mill is adjacent to the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL), and an afternoon train is seen pushing north across the Raritan River Drawbridge. These newer double-decker cars are nice and sleek looking. Unfortunately, more and more of them are getting plastered with unsightly advertisements. I would be OK with the advertisements if they kept the fares from going up, but I doubt they will. |
