Album Info:Series of photos depicting the final runs of the Ontario Northlander daily (except Saturday) commuter line connecting Toronto to northern Ontario communities. This train ceased operation on Friday, September 28, 2012. I have photographed this train for many years in these parts, and will miss the friendly waves from the engineers, who have seen my smiling face at various points along the line, and in all kinds of weather.

Description:  Just after hearing the news that the Northlander service was going to be canceled, I recall taking this pic and thinking, "It's stormy skies ahead for the Northlander in more ways than one."

Description:  Holiday Monday Northlander approaches McCowan Road. Unfortunately, the protest STOP signs painted onto the Northlander locomotives would offer little protection from a government bent on shutting this line down, despite having all kinds of money to waste on all kinds of other political pet projects.

Description:  The final Sunday. My tribute to the 'Northlander'. This pic taken at Gormley (near the site of the new GO Station that will serve the Richmond Hill line) on Sunday morning - the last Sunday journey to Cochrane before this train is terminated for good on September 28, 2012. Regular passengers must really be looking forward to the 9-hour bus trip that will replace the journey by train.

Description:  I had hoped for the weather to cooperate as I ventured out to capture the Northlander's last days of operation. Fortunately, all the weeding I did around the tracks would pay off later in the week when I caught the very last Northlander inbound for Toronto Union Station, at just about the same time, but without the clouds.

Description:  Just had to head out this morning to catch the last Ontario Northlander train heading for Cochrane. Sad day for railfans. Actually quite a crowd gathering at my usual hangout at McCowan Road, so I headed for Mount Albert overpass to get a more majestic panorama.

Description:  The end of the Northlander. This is it. The Northlander enters the home stretch just north of Toronto on its final run. Enormous construction site on the right will be the new GO Transit layover facility when the Richmond Hill line expands to Gormley in the near future.

Description:  BUT WAIT! How about a rousing encore for the 'Northlander'!?! I didn't expect to see this train ever again, but wouldn't you know it, after catching an incoming Saturday morning VIA train at Pine Orchard, then a CN freight at Herald Road, I stumbled onto the Northlander waiting at the Quaker siding and knew that I had not one moment to lose if I wanted to get a shot of her in the sunshine. I chased her (and I mean chased!) from Stouffville to Van Dorf, and just barely had time to leap out of the car, and snap this shot of the empty train as it hit the grade crossing at Warden Avenue - destined for its home base in the great Ontario north.
