Album Info:We visited the Upsala-Lenna Jernväg in Sweden. This is a heritage/tourist railroad originally built to serve mines and local villages in a lake district east of the University City of Upsala. It’s accessible from Upsala’s main passenger station, and runs 20 miles to the east on a roller-coaster profile of a route, crossing multiple low north-south oriented ridges separating several scenic lakes now used for vacation homes by fortunate Stockholmers. Our train was pulled by BLJ5 – also called “Thor”, built in 1909 by ASJ Falun for Byvalla-Långshyttans Jernväg (BLJ). The steam-engine is today used at Upsala-Lenna Jernväg, a 891 mm narrow-gauge heritage railway, running from Upsala to Faringe. Wheel arrangement is 2-8-4T on a single chassis. Upsala-Lenna Jernväg is 891mm gage, which converts to 2ft. 11-1/10”; also called Swedish 3-foot gage, and pretty much unique to Sweden. If good fortune ever casts your lot in the Stockholm area, this heritage railway is a wonderful visit for any railfan.
