Onawa at its busiest was a wide spot in the middle of the Maine Woods on the fabled Canadian Pacific line through Maine. It was the destination of the Scoot. This train serviced the remote CP stations deep in interor of Maine. I saw the scoot under steam when I was a little shaver of 4 or 5 which puts it about 4 or 5 years after the 470 made its last trip on the Maine Central. At that time there was no road into Onawa. Today you can get there from here with a 20 minute trip off Rt15 through Bod Fish. The road will turn to dirt now n again. When these where taken in 2009 one of the locals (there are only 3 or 4 who live there year round) said there was 1 train a day either east or west, and they tended to run at night. My observations at Brownville indicate that this is still the case. BTW on my visit there were dusty tire tracks on the rail head. I guess the track inspector had been making his rounds. Today most of the RR related structures are long gone. There was 1 building trackside which was a private residence/camp. The one dominant structure still in service is the Bridge a 1/2 mile or so east of the village. It traverses the gorge at the outlet to Lake Onawa. Eastbound the next siding is 5 miles awat at Benson. Westbound youd stopp at Bod Fish 3.5 miles. No yard there now. /DL |

The view from Borestone |

I almost didn't include this view. The bridge is just left of center. The Town of Onawa is center frame. Most of the residents are part time and visit the camps on Lake Onawa during fishing & hunting season. A sign track side said NO ATVs or Snowmobiles on RR right of way. BTW I highly recoment the treck up Borestone. It is one of the best views in the state for a 2 hour round trip climb. /DL |
