OWLS wear |

The shiny rail running left to right is the BNSF main transcon line through Newton. K&O run the low speed direction up and down in the photo. Note the pitting it has started to cause after 3 years of wear. The rusty looking rails parallel with the shiny track is a sacraficial rail that fills the gap between the flangeway and the mainline track. |

Ballast cleaning |
Description: |
Balfour Beatty RM 80-UHR ballast maintainer. The unit is moving left to right at a slow walking pace. The track is lifted and a long chainsaw like bar is extended under the track drawing the ballast to this side of the car. It is then augered up the side and onto a series of conveyer belts and discharged to the side at the front of the unit. As it moves, it replaces the ballast with clean/new (to the left of the men) and the track is laid back down. |
