It was later rebuilt to a GP40WH-2 and became MARC 65. By 9/2010 it was retired and would eventually end up in Boise, ID at Motive Power Industries. Who would have guessed back in '79 that it would have such a colorful history?. |

Only the trailing Paducah re-build suggest that it may be a bit later. It is, in fact, a full seven years and counting since the birth of Illinois Central Gulf as this freight rolls through Freeburg, Illinois the day after Christmas in 1979. |

There is a real beauty of a portrait of this lead GP40 by Andrew Koenigsberg (in his album Some misc. roster shots) from the Summer of 1978. Lets just say that by the Winter of 87, it was looking pretty rough. The 2nd unit is interesting not just because it is still in GM&O colors, but because there are two different stories about its eventual fate. One has it going to Goderich & Exeter 9543 (later re-numbered GEXR 3835), The other having it end up with NECR via Conrail and then Helm Leasing. Guess I'll need to look into that further.. |

But speaking of not seeing it anymore, you certainly won't see this or any other railroad action in Red Bud, IL anymore. Rather surprised to find there are no other photos from this location. -- I know there are some out there. Here, an ex-GM&O geep trundles a local turn along the - now abandoned - ex-GM&O line past the ex-GM&O depot in the Spring of 87. |
