Dalies Divide |
Description: |
This place reminds me of Bryn Mawr, PA. Geographically that would seem counter-intuitive. And yet there is something that reminds me of that place in the days when freight operation still prevailed along the Main Line. Westbound freights (particularly the old LCL-7 at night) would come struggling over the crest of the grade at Bryn Mawr and by the time most of the consist had passed, the train was making maximum speed. At Dalies, it is similar - this westbound intermodal has been laboring up the long grade from Belen and by the time half of its consist has passed the train will be sailing past as it heads downgrade now, into the valley of the Rio Puerco. |

Cantilever Contemplations |
Description: |
BNSF 7617 brings a westbound manifest over the top of the grade from Belen past Dalies, junction with the old passenger main via Raton Pass, where several classic Santa Fe cantilevers still stand with their ornate metal framework and right-side display alluding to the era of long boilers or geep-style cabs. So many of these aesthetically appealing cantilevers have fallen that their once ubiquitous presence about the system is now a matter of the unique and of almost quaint reflection upon a different era when each railroad had its individual character and style. |

Bridging the gap |
Description: |
When the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad was waiting for equipment and funds in order to cross 250 foot deep Canyon Diablo, a town sprang up here that was known to be wilder and with more gunfights, robberies and murders than Abilene, Dodge and Tombstone combined. Canyon Diablo had 14 saloons, 10 gambling houses and 4 brothels, and sheriffs did not last for long. That was the 19th century version of getting your kicks on Route 66. Once the railroad completed a single-track span across the canyon, the town quickly evaporated. In 1947, Santa Fe constructed the impressive new 544 foot long cantilevered truss span to replace the old trestle - piers and abutments for which can be plainly seen. But for the passing of trains such as BNSF 4124 East here, nary a soul inhabits the place today - just a few signal masts, controlled crossovers and some stored cars, the sun and the wind. |

BNSF 5191 makes the grade |
Description: |
I wanted to get to Yampai with plenty of light left in the afternoon. Story goes that in the days of current of traffic railroading, dispatchers could tell how a train would do between Needles and Goffs based upon how they did on the grade between Pica and Yampai. This information was an important part of "figuring" where your trains were going to be, and when, so as to clear following hotshots; much as I did in keeping "pencil figures" on the trainsheet when dispatching UPs Third and Fourth Subdivisions of the Wyoming Division between Rawlins and Ogden, some years ago. BNSF 5191 climbs upgrade as it nears Yampai Summit with the Aubrey cliffs in the background. |

BNSF 7766 gets out of Bealville. Modern units are so sound-muffled that it can be deceiving at times as to how much exertion is being cast.
