Jefferson Avenue Interlocking |
Description: |
For most of the twentieth century, the double track lines of the IC/ICG and the New Orleans Public Belt ran side-by-side along the Mississippi River from Lambert Junction in Jefferson Parish to Race Street Junction, a distance of 7.4 miles. For most of the way, the NOPB tracks were on the riverside of the IC/ICG; but between Jefferson Avenue Interlocking and Harmony Street Interlocking, two miles, the roads swapped positions. Here is ICG southbound piggyback train P-55 crossing over the NOPB at Jefferson Avenue, about a mile from its destination at the railroad's intermodal ramp at Stuyvesant Docks Yard. Today's train has an especially eclectic mixture of power: GP10 8249, GP11 8734 and SD20 2001. The freight cars on the left are in the NOPB's Cotton Warehouse Yard. |

ICG P-55 |
Description: |
Illinois Central Gulf piggyback train P-55 was siting in the railroad's New Orleans piggyback ramp at Stuyvesnt Docks Yard, at the end of its 900-miles trip from Chicago. The locomotives were GP40's 3067, 3036 and 3069. The 3036 was a part of the IC's first order for 40 GP40's, built in 1966; but the other two were from an order of 10 units delivered in 1968. Unlike the first 60 units, which lacked many options, the 1968 units - along with five more delivered in 1969 - were fully loaded, with oscillating signal lights, L-shaped windshields, dynamic brakes, higher-speed gearing and big 3600-gallon fuel tanks. These last units also weighed nine tons more than the earlier ones. Even though the 3067's 18-year-old paint job was being protected by a generous layer of dirt, yellow primer was showing through on its nose and cab. It was rebuilt as the 3125 three years later. |

ICG Stuyvesant Docks Yard |
Description: |
This shows the area around the ICG's intermodal ramp at Stuyvesant Docks Yard after most of the yard had been removed in 1984. The vacant area on the left once contained 17 tracks, which were removed after the land was sold to the Port of New Orleans in 1984. The 4-track yard on the right, with SW14 1460, was built at that time. In the center of the photo, intermodal train P-55 is pulling into the piggyback ramp with three GP40's - 3067, 3036 and 3069 - and 14 cars. |

DCTRR GE |
Description: |
The Dockside Commodity Terminal leased space along the Mississippi River at the Illinois Central Gulf's Stuyvesant Docks, and used this 25-ton GE to move covered hopper cars. The little loco was serial number 17775, built in January 1943 for the Marietta Manufacturing Co. for use at the U.S. Naval Supply Depot at Point Pleasant, WV. After it left New Orleans it went to IMCo at Houston. |

LAMCO |
Description: |
LAMCO SD10's 315 and 316 were photographed in the ICG's Stuyvesant Docks Yard, located along the Mississippi River in New Orleans. The locos were on their way from the ICG's shop in Paducah, Kentucky to the Liberian-American-Swedish Mining Co. in Liberia; and would be loaded on a ship here in New Orleans. The 315 was built as UP SD7 781, and was later UP 456. The 316 was originally UP 782 and then UP 457. The placards attached to the handrails provided the units' weight and shipping instructions. |

IC Warehouse No. 32 |
Description: |
This building was originally IC Warehouse No. 32, but when this photo was taken it belonged to the ICG. It was located between Tchoupitoulas Street, shown here, and the railroad's Stuyvesant Docks Yard. The building extended from Louisiana Avenue to General Taylor Street, seven blocks or about 2,300 feet, and contained almost 293,00 square feet. Prior to the construction of the new yard office at Mays Yard in the 1960's, this building also housed the offices of the railroad's Louisiana Division. It was still standing in 2013, although it is now served by the New Orleans Public Belt. |
