CB&Q U25B 100
Title:  CB&Q U25B 100
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 100 at Clyde, Illinois on February 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The U25B was a bold move, since the CB&Q was a loyal EMD customer for a couple of decades. One assumes there is a story from the front offices to go with this photo, but the CB&Q acquired its first non-EMD road units in this order of these six U25B's (#'s 100-105) in 1964. It surely sent a message to EMD. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35194), became BN 5424, and was retired in May 1981. Behind the U25B is a F3B and an SD24. On the other track is GP7 233.

CB&Q U25B 102
Title:  CB&Q U25B 102
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 102 feeling out of place at Clyde, Illinois on May 7, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35196), became BN 5426, and was retired in May 1981. It appears it was last used as a trailing unit, otherwise the cab shades would have been extended. The GE units were relatively new to the people at Clyde on this date.

CB&Q U25B 103
Title:  CB&Q U25B 103
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 103 westbound on the CGI at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CGI was an expedited freight train between Cicero, Illinois and Grand Island, Nebraska, and featured a pool of locomotives from the CB&Q and UP. It started in the late GP9 era (about 1960) and lasted (I believe) to the BN merger. Usually the newest locomotives were used, but I got a shot of a similar lashup headed by a Q F2. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35197), became BN 5427, and was retired in July 1981.

Title:  CB&Q U25B 103
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 103 westbound at @aperville, Illinois on March 21, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1964 (c/n 35197), it became BN 5427 and was retired in July 1981. It is seen here heading a westbound freight, trailing is a GP30, GP35, and two D&RGW GP30's. At the time of the photo, the CB&Q had run-through arrangements with a few railroads, the Rio Grande being one. The Burlington also had run-through arrangements with the UP and the NYC, and later, the PC. However, when the Q found one of its shiny new GE locomotives in MOW service on the PC, that arrangement was quickly terminated.

CB&Q U25B 104
Title:  CB&Q U25B 104
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 104 westbound at Mendota, Illinois on March 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1964 (c/n 35198) it became BN 5428 and was retired in May 1981. It is seen here at the head of train CGI (Chicago - Grand Island), an expedited freight featuring CB&Q and UP pooled power, in this case, UP supplying most of the power with four GP30's, the first one is a GP30B. The occasion of this rather well documented move was a fuel stop for a steam fantrip powered by 2-8-2 4960, a round trip from Chicago to Zearing for $7.50.

CB&Q FT 110D
Title:  CB&Q FT 110D
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 110D westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 28, 1963, Kodak Tri-X negative by Chuck Zeiler. The following description is by my friend Edward M. DeRouin:

A westbound train, possible 67-A, a Cicero - Galesburg maid-of-all-work, has stopped at Naperville to make a connection with the East End Way Freight. The FT #110D&C have cut off their train east of the depot and are backing a 40 foot Canadian Pacific boxcar toward the waiting local. We may speculate that the car is a load of newsprint for delivery to a team track at Downers Grove or La Grange for use by a local newspaper publisher. We will never know if this move was fairly routine or a hot car movement due to a missed connection because of holiday traffic. The picture was taken December 28, 1963. Motors 110D&C are working their final miles. Built in June 1944, they will be traded in on new Chinese red high horsepower GP35's the following April.

The waycar (caboose) in the background is the rear of the East End Way Freight which was switching Naperville at the time of this photo. The setout car will be blocked into the way freight's consist and forwarded to the customer.

CB&Q FT 113A
Title:  CB&Q FT 113A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 113A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 14, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1944 (c/n 2189) on EMD Order E561, this was the lead unit of FT locomotive 113, an A-B-B-A set of FT's. During the early 1950's the suffix letter was added as some of the FT sets were broken up. Sorry about the odd angle, as I recall, I was told to mow the lawn, and I wasn't happy about that. As I was mowing, the crossing gates started dropping, and I pondered whether to continue mowing, or run in and grab my camera. As you can see, I opted for the latter, but I was too late.

Title:  CB&Q F3 116D
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 116D at the Clyde, Illinois Diesel House on March 26, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. You might think this is creative framing, with the flanged wheels appearing out of focus in the lower left. Truth be told, I was using the next set of wheels as my tripod, and I could not move the wheels in front out of frame. This locomotive was built in October 1947 (c/n 4405) on EMD Order E790 and traded in for a U28B during December 1966.

CB&Q F3 121A
Title:  CB&Q F3 121A
Description:  CB&Q F3 121A east of Eola, Illinois on Sunday October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during November 1947 (c/n 4465) on EMD Order E790A and was sold for scrap in May 1965 to Precision Engineering. This image is a result of my having missed the eastbound Dinky (commuter train) in Aurora, and the next Dinky was two hours later. Heck, I could walk home (to Naperville, 10 miles east) in two hours, and that's what I did. I shot photos along the way, and this location is about a half mile east of the EJ&E overpass in Eola. As it turned out, the next Dinky beat me to Naperville, but not by much.
