Title: |
The Super Chief at Albuquerque |
Description: |
Amtrak's no.3, the Super Chief, slows to a stop at New Mexico's biggest city in July 1973. The SDP40Fs were still brand new- having been delivered only the preceeding month. 18 cars trail; a collection of former Santa Fe Hi-Levels and what would later be called "Heritage" cars from UP, ATSF and SP. As replacements for the motley collection of Es and Fs that Amtrak had started with the SDP40Fs were viewed by most as a sign that Amtrak was off on the right foot. Few, if any, could've forseen their coming problems and the black cloud they were retired under only a few years later. |

Santa Fe SD24 4575 |

ATSF SD24 4575 was 13 years old when this picture was taken at Albuquerque in 1973. The unit was in remote-control helper service north to Raton at the time and is shown here coupled to a U23C and r/c car for that work. It would be rebuilt by the company a year later into an "SD26", which would give it a dozen more years of service before being sold to the Springfield Terminal as their 645. |

Santa Fe Road Slug 113 |
Description: |
Santa Fe rebuilt a number of EMD F3Bs and F7Bs in the early '70s into road slugs for potash duty in Southeast New Mexico. Initally connected to F7As they soon were wired to CF7s and operated in eight-unit sets on the branches out of Carlsbad and Loving NM. This is slug 113, the former passenger-service F3B 31B. It survived in this work through 1982. It's shown here at work about 15 miles east of Carlsbad. |

20% of the World's GP7Bs |
Description: |
EMD built only five GP7Bs and they all went to Santa Fe. During the mid-70s you could usually find one or two working as switchers at the Clovis NM yards. Here 2790A assists CF7 2553; it would be rebuilt with a cab and into a GP9U in 1978. |

MP and Santa Fe |
Description: |
During the late 1970s the MP ran a nightly Ft Worth to the Santa Fe at Clovis NM. You could usually catch the MoPac power in the morning- as shown here. This was when you could sign a waiver in the yard office and gain access to the entire facility. |
